What Is Modern?
Modern is Magic: The Gathering's most popular competitive non-rotating format. Every card printed at 8th Edition rarity or later (going back to 2003) is legal in Modern — giving you over two decades of powerful cards to work with. Unlike Standard, cards never rotate out of Modern. Once you build a Modern deck, that investment stays valid indefinitely.
Modern is played at Friday Night Magic, Grand Prix, Regional Championship Qualifiers, and the Magic Online Championship Series. It's the format where MTG's most iconic powerful cards — Lightning Bolt, Path to Exile, Thoughtseize — define entire archetypes.
Modern Format Rules
60-Card Minimum
Modern decks require at least 60 cards. Top competitive decks run exactly 60 for maximum consistency.
4 Copies Maximum
Up to 4 copies of any non-basic card. Modern's power level means you want your best 4 cards every game.
Non-Rotating
Cards never rotate out of Modern. Your investment in staples like Ragavan or Fury stays legal permanently.
Banlist
Modern has a more extensive ban list than Standard. Historically broken cards (Ponder, Birthing Pod, Splinter Twin) are banned. CardForge checks automatically.
Fast Format
Modern games often end by turn 4. The format rewards fast, efficient threats and interaction over slow value strategies.
15-Card Sideboard
Sideboards are critical in Modern. Graveyard hate, artifact removal, and enchantment answers are standard sideboard inclusions.
Modern Card Pool: 8th Edition Forward
Modern's legal card pool starts with 8th Edition (July 2003) and includes every standard-legal expansion, core set, and supplemental set printed since. This means some of the most powerful cards in Magic history are legal — though the most broken have been banned.
Key categories of Modern-legal power cards:
- Fetchlands — Polluted Delta, Scalding Tarn, Verdant Catacombs. Essential for multicolor mana fixing.
- Shocklands — Steam Vents, Stomping Ground, Hallowed Fountain. Enter tapped or pay 2 life.
- One-Mana Threats — Lightning Bolt (3 damage for R), Path to Exile (exile for W), Thoughtseize (discard for B).
- Free Spells — Fury, Solitude, Subtlety, Endurance (the Evoke Elementals). Game-changing when evoked for free.
- Two-Drop Threats — Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer (the most powerful creature in Modern history).

Modern Mana Base Construction
Modern's fetchland + shockland mana base is the format's most important investment. Understanding it is essential:
- Fetchlands (8–10): Scalding Tarn, Misty Rainforest, etc. Thin your deck and find dual lands. Pay 1 life to search for any dual land you need.
- Shocklands (6–8): Steam Vents, Breeding Pool, etc. Pay 2 life to enter untapped. These are what fetchlands find.
- Colorless Utility Lands (2–4): Urza's Saga (artifact tutor + Construct tokens), Boseiju (uncounterable land), Field of Ruin (land hate).
- Life Total Management: Fetchlands + shocklands can drain 6–10 life by turn 3. Build your sideboard accordingly and watch your pips.
- CardForge analyzes your mana pip requirements to recommend the right land count and dual land split for your color combination.

Modern vs. Other Non-Rotating Formats
Modern sits in a unique position among MTG's non-rotating formats:
- Modern vs. Legacy: Legacy allows cards from all of MTG history (including the Power Nine and Dual Lands). Modern is more affordable and accessible — Legacy staples like Underground Sea cost hundreds per card.
- Modern vs. Pioneer: Pioneer starts at Return to Ravnica (2012) — more restricted than Modern but less expensive. Modern is the more powerful and well-supported format at most game stores.
- Modern vs. Commander: Modern is 1v1 competitive, 60 cards. Commander is multiplayer, 100 cards. Many players play both. Your Modern card collection has significant overlap with Commander.
